There are plenty of way to beat this, like all bcnm, this is simply an account of what happened, mostly from my perspective.

Party: Rng/nin, Whm/blm, Pld/war, Mnk/war, Brd/whm, Smn/whm

3 melees ate steamed crab, perskois au lait, and had 12 hi-potions each. Mages had ethers, yag drinks.

Monk took right most, paladin center, and ranger took leftmost. Ranger starts kiting. Mnk 2hrs. Smn 2hrs with shiva (1st shot). As the ranger, I tried to run my guy past the others in time for the second shiva blasting. This took hate from me, which was good in that I could recast utsusemi and use hi potions. I took hate back with just one shot. Then I was gravitied… that really stank. Our whm didn't have erase, so I used shadowbind to stay alive, and reblink. Just after gravity wears off, mine unbinds, and casts bind on me. I couldn't hipotion fast enough and it killed me. Just after this, Smn gets off #3. Whm ends up tanking mine somehow, until Monk can kill theirs. Monk takes it off whm, but dies shortly thereafter. Pld tanks them both, using invincible. Whm, Brd, Smn, and Pld struggle to conserve mp, I don't know how they did it really, some mighty fine playing. Second one finally goes down. With just one left whm can save enough MP to raise me. I immediately 2hr the last one. It keeps casting -ga spells on me and the pld. Being weak I just don't have enough HP to take it and I die while activating a hi-potion. Whm raises me again, and sadly, I hit "ok" just as the thing casts another -ga spell, killing me instantly. They have enough MP now, however, and I stay alive on the third raise. I back off out of -ga range and we finish it off.

In total, paladin used 12 hi-potions, I used 11, and monk used about as many.

Things I learned:

  • Rng kiter probably wants close to 20 hi-potions. Also your whm needs to be ready to erase you for bind and gravity.
  • This battle takes everything you've got. Be prepared to give it.
Our sister party went right after us, but they failed. They ran out of time. Their setup was Thf/nin, Whm/blm, Blm/whm, Brd/whm, Pld/war, Drg/war. I think their problem was not enough killing power. Their theif said they evaded most of the physical attacks (as Rng, I got hit by all of them) but when theirs changed to blm job they couldn't avoid the spells (which was odd, except for gravity and bind, the blm didn't hurt me as much - then again, I died pretty fast) It may be that their plan involved blm healing more than hurting, and they needed a faster kill at the start. I'll have to ask them for more details. Perhaps, if I (rng) and their thf were swapped, and I had not been bound or got erased very very fast, both teams would have been more balanced for the task. Not sure. We will try it again soon, since we still have 7-8 people that need to finish it.
