Why
I had some interesting crafting experiences but I didn't want to clutter up the nice pages Mesxiah and Mashengo made, so I'll just write about them here.

Key Items: Anima Synthesis, Concoction, Trituration, Gold Purification, Iatrochemistry

History
I didn't craft much at first. In hindsight I recommend you craft from about level 10 (I found I needed all my resources for equipment before that). Explore any crafts you want and then try to pick one that seems fun. Don't worry about which one's "best" or anything. There are ways to make money for all of them and ways to level all of them up somewhat cheaply. It only becomes expensive if you're in a hurry.

As for me I decided to level Alchemy and Goldsmithing. My main job is ranger and I thought it would be cool if I could make my own silver bullets. If you have a cool linkshell and they're into crafting you might want to see if there's a craft none of them are good at (so you can contribute more), or one that one of them has maxed (so you can get good advice).

So I built up to around 45 alchemy using the guides on this site. Next I went for goldsmithing. Most sites claim that it will cost you loads of gil to level it up but I managed to do it very cheaply to 25. Only the copper hairpins were a loss. Past 25 I started incurring losses but so far nothing terribly horriffic.

Next I moved onto Woodworking. It's easy and cheap to level. I got to 59 but I'm too lazy to do the fishing rods to 60. I can HQ the lvl 16 bolts often enough now for profit or just cheaper ammo. I recommend this craft to anyone who wants to try an easier one out and not pay too much gil to PL it.

After pushing alchemy to 63 I took up a few levels of smithing. I'll need it for the 80+ synths in alchemy and it's supposedly cheap to get to 20 or so.

I'm back to alchemy, with smithing on the side a bit to prepare for post-73 synths. Some of you are probably like me, however, and can't really stick to one thing. While this is a mistake, profit wise (probably ought to finish one first), it's more fun… so I started in on clothcraft too. In part this is because I was levelling mage classes for fun, and read that there is an early stage of clothcraft that is performed sitting in selbina.

4/19/05 I'm back on powering up Alchemy. I decided it was better to finish one after all, so I've been just doing alchemy for a few weeks now. Since I've switched back to Bastok and loaded up on supply quests I can live in my hometown for the guild support and to do GP everyday. I've also realized I should date these comments… oh well better late than never.

4/25/05 Eww the last 16 levels are pretty horrendous. I've not had huge losses until now, but I'm not sure they can be avoided anymore. I may just farm giant bird feathers and do icarus from 84-93 (that'll involve some hefty breaks though).

5/03/05 Farming isn't efficient and you need too many feathers. Cannon Shells are the least loss per synth of all the options. They require smithing 29 to start so I'm levelling smithing a bit first.

9/13/05 Back on cannon shells now, smithing is 34. At 88 the shells suddenly seemed to give a lot more skill ups (you know, like, more than 0.1/stack of stynths). Support is, as always, a huge must. I also Veteranized myself last night, just 11 levels to go...

10/2/05 If I never see another Cannon Shell again, it will be too soon. (That doesn't even make sense!) Phew, down to the final two stages. For 94-96 you want to alternate synthing panacea and platinum ingots, because you need the first to make the second, and the second caps at 96 while the former caps at 98. Oh hey did I mention that philosopher's stones are 1.2M per stack? If I play the AH this is break even… if I don't lose anything.

11/3/05 Almost there, anyone need some Pro-ethers? I'm forced to take my time at the very end, due to a lack of funds. Gotta wait for one set of pro-ethers to sell before I can skill up more.

11/11/05 Alchemy 100!

2/xx/06 Finally got the MH +1 item for alchemy.

4/24/06 Iatrichemistry, I was behind the curve a bit and missed out on the absurd profiteering, only making about 3M for free on the pup attachments before the crash.
