ClientSummary
BalakafBalakaf
(Port Ephramad, Aht Urhgan Whitegate) (I-5)

Take pictures with Balakaf's "image recorder" at the places he specifies.

  • Talk to Balakaf (I-5); he is found upstairs on the right-hand side of the northern port of Whitegate (Port Ephramad).
  • After a short cutscene, he will give you the Image Recorder key item.
  • Next, be sure to pick up some Light Crystals before heading off into Wajaom Woodlands.
    • You will eventually need to get a couple of Light Clusters (or maybe two Aurora Crystals instead) since simple Light Crystals won't be powerful enough to take some pictures.

  • 1) First, Balakaf wants see the volcano that can be glimpsed from Wajaom Woodlands. As he tells you, he'll never forget the plumes of smoke billowing from its peak, even though it was a cloudy day when he saw it with his own eyes.
    • Travel to (E-6) in Wajaom Woodlands and examine the ??? that shows you a breathtaking view.
    • It doesn't matter what time you take the picture as long as the weather is cloudy. A "cloudy" day just means that the sky must be filled with clouds (no blue in the sky)—but don't confuse this with "wind" elemental weather.
    • Therefore, wait for a cloudy day and trade a Light Crystal to the ???.
    • After trading the crystal, you will be presented with a choice of three different shots, choose the first scene (the one where you have a clear view of the volcano and it's billowing smoke).
    • Return to Balakaf to complete the first part of the quest.
    • Reward:Imperial Silver Piece (#1).

  • 2) Next, Balakaf wants to see the “Lovers' Rocks” at Arrapago Reef. Standing in the snow and looking upon those two pillars standing side by side always reminded him of his dear wife.
    • Wait one real life day (JP midnight) and talk with Balakaf again; you'll receive the Image Recorder.
    • Travel to (G-8) in Arrapago Reef. This requires a Lamia Fang Key or a Thief who can pick the door locks. If you use a Thief, don't use Thief's Tools — instead use Skeleton Keys; they have a much higher success rate.
    • Wait for "ice" elemental weather. In Arrapago Reef, this happens, roughly, every 5-6 hours.
    • When it starts to snow, trade a Light Crystal to the ???.
    • After trading the crystal, choose the second scene (the one where the rocks are very close together).
    • Return to Balakaf. He'll complain about the picture being too dark, but you'll still complete the first half of the second part of the quest.
    • Reward:Imperial Silver Piece (#2).
    • Wait one real life day (JP midnight) and talk with Balakaf again.

  • As it just so happens, a regular Light Crystal isn't bright enough to capture an image in the murky depths of Arrapago Reef — so you have to go back again; this time, using a Light Cluster. Unfortunately, knowing this in advance doesn't mean that foresight is 20/20; FFXI doesn't let you cheat. You can't trade the Light Cluster to begin with because Squeenix likes to force you to do things the loooong, hard way.
    • So again, travel to (G-8) in Arrapago Reef.
    • Again, make sure to farm a Lamia Fang Key or have a Thief with some Skeleton Keys.
    • Wait for "ice" weather.
    • Trade a Light Cluster to the ???.
    • Pick scene two.
    • Go back to Balakaf and give him his damn Image Recorder.
    • Reward:Imperial Silver Piece (#3).

  • 3) Next, Balakaf wants to see the ruins that can be glimpsed from Mount Zhayolm. He still remembers the sight of them bathed in the gentle glow of the evening sun.
    • Wait one real life day (JP midnight) and talk with Balakaf again; you'll receive the Image Recorder.
    • Now, off you go to (C-9) of Mount Zhayolm. But you didn't think it would be as easy as all that, did you?
    • Unfortunately, to get to (C-9) you'll need the Cast Metal Plate key item; similar to the Moongate Pass in Ro'Maeve.
    • Follow Mashengo's Cast Metal Plate (Mini Quest) walkthrough to find out how to obtain this key item.
    • To get to the ??? location, you'll need to go through the Gates of Halvung (J-7) using the Cast Metal Plate.
    • Next, zone into Halvung at (G-7). Go straight and zone back into Mount Zhayolm.
    • Be careful of the True Sight shadow dragons here!
    • Circle SW around the mountain until you reach the ??? at (C-9).
    • Wait for the sun to set. This will happen between 16:00-18:0
    • Trade a Light Crystal to the ??? between those times.
    • Choose the third scene.
    • Return to Balakaf to complete the third part of this quest.
    • Reward:Imperial Silver Piece (#4).

  • 4) Next, Balakaf wants to see the flows of lava seeping from the heights of Halvung. It was quite the spectacle for him as a young lad traipsing through in the wee hours of the morning.
    • Wait one real life day (JP midnight) and talk with Balakaf again; you'll receive the Image Recorder.
    • You'll want to travel to (I-8) in Halvung.
    • In order to get there, you should enter Halvung from (F-8) in Bhaflau Thickets.
    • Once you get to the ???, watch out for the bombs and stay up late into the wee hours of the morning.
    • Trade a Light Crystal to the ??? between 3:00-6:0
    • Choose the first scene.
    • Return to Balakaf to complete the third part of this quest.
    • Reward:Imperial Silver Piece (#5).

photo5
  • 5) Next, Balakaf wants to see the ruins in the Aydeewa Subterrane. The howl of the wind there once spoke volumes to him...
  • Travel to ( - )

photo6
  • 6) Next, Balakaf wants to see the waterfall in Mamook. He was lost for words in its beauty, an opalescent thread reflecting the light of the sun.
  • Travel to ( - )

photo7
  • 7) Next, Balakaf wants to see the graveyard in Caedarva Mire. By nightfall, he began to imagine the tombstones to be monstrous men… That place be more than a mite terrifying.
  • Travel to ( - )
