Yo Ho (A Corsair's Life for Me)

(Corsair's Roll)? (No thanks.)

Yes, yes—having a job that can give you an experience points bonus is an amazing ability. However, don't get too used to it. As any good Corsair will tell you, if you're still using Corsair's Roll religiously after Lv.40 you're only going to be hurting your overall EXP per hour. Honestly, you shouldn't really be using it much after Lv.31; some extreme people even believe that you shouldn't be using it at all after Lv.14—but that might be tad bit inflexible.

Some of you may be surprised by this. In fact, I could name a few dozen people whom I've encountered while leveling Corsair in the Lv.60-75 range who would send me irritable /tells about how they wanted Corsair's Roll; "Wherz the COR roll?". Sometimes it seems like the uninformed think that Corsairs are nothing more than walking Empress Bands.

Not that I expect non-Corsairs to read this or do any research into how the job is played, but I figured I'd try to explain it here since I'm tired of explaining it repeatedly in /tells during experience points parties.

When you get both Hunter's Roll (Accuracy and Ranged Accuracy) and Chaos Roll (Attack Up), the measily +5-20 EXP bonus from Corsair's Roll becomes a completley lackluster ability. Like I stated above, some people don't understand that if you can enable your party to kill faster, it will improve your EXP per hour—much more than the measily EXP bonus from Corsair's Roll could ever hope to make up for.

When a Corsair can increase your party's Critical Hit rate, Accuracy, Ranged Accuracy, Attack, Store TP, Magical Attack, and give Double Attack to everybody… why people would still want a trivial and very marginal EXP bonus is beyond me.

Now, on the flip side, the decision whether to use or not to use Corsair's Roll (early on) can be highly situational. For instance, before Lv.40 and Evoker's Roll, the mages don't really have a worthwhile second roll. Also, there may be circumstances where you'd like to apply Corsair's Roll to a particular individual in order to close a small EXP gap; but those situations don't arise very often.

Some Corsairs will try to end a #4 or #5 EXP chain with Corsair's Roll. Although it's possible, it's up to the individual Corsair whether or not they can fit it into their standard roll order.

So, in summary; although it's not universal, most good Corsair's know how to play their job—they don't need you being demanding of them or telling them what rolls they should use. So if you're not consistently getting Corsair's Roll past Lv.14, Lv.31, or Lv.40, please don't keep pestering them.

Know When To Hold 'Em, Know When To Fold 'Em

Each Roll has a Lucky and Unlucky number.

The potency of a roll normally corresponds to your running total for that roll; a Ninja Roll of 3 provides less +evasion than a Ninja Roll of 7. However, the Lucky/Unlucky numbers are an exception; if you hit a Lucky number, it will enhance your roll to be slightly less powerful than that of an 11 (the maximum effect)—an Unlucky number will reduce the potency of the effect to be slightly more than a total of 1 (the minimum effect).

Also, if you go over 11, you will Bust and you (the Corsair) will receive a negative penalty; for example, if you Bust on Ninja Roll, you will receive an Evasion debuff (-evasion) for the duration of the Bust — which is five minutes.

For example, let's break down the ever-popular Evoker's Roll:
